France rallies amid increasing global support of Rohingya

In Paris a rally was held in support of the Muslim Rohingyas of Myanmar, a group described by Human Rights Watch as one of the most persecuted in the world. Despite living in Myanmar since perhaps the seventh century, the Rohingyas are fighting for their right to exist in the overwhelmingly Buddhist nation.

In recent months hundreds have been killed, leading to accusations of state-sponsored ethnic cleansing. Decades of discrimination and repression have left many Rohingya villages practically defenseless.


Hundreds of thousands of refugees have already fled to Bangladesh and Pakistan. Myanmar has resettled nearly 100,000 Rohingya inside refugee camps, but rights groups say the government has purposely blocked outside humanitarian aid.

Many feel Nobel Peace Prize recipient and leading politician Aung San Suu Kyi isn't doing enough to stop the violence.

The UN, the Organization of Islamic Cooperation and nations worldwide have recently rebuked Myanmar and demanded an end to the violence.

If Myanmar wants to return to the international community it will have to respond to the increasing global outcry regarding their treatment of the Rohingya and implement serious reforms and immediate efforts at integration.
