JEDDAH, June 19 (Bernama) -- A month after being appointed as the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) Special Representative on Rohingya Muslims of Myanmar, Tan Sri Syed Hamid Albar has outlined his action plan at a special meeting here.

OIC Secretary-General, Iyad Ameen Madani chaired the meeting of the OIC Contact Group on Rohingya Muslims of Myanmar to discuss the latest developments on the issue and the challenges these people have been facing.

It was held on the sidelines of the 41st Session of the Council of Foreign Ministers which ends Thursday.

"He welcomed the members of the Contact Group to this special meeting and thanked his Special Representative on Rohingya Muslims of Myanmar, the former Malaysian Foreign Minister (Tan Sri) Syed Hamid Albar, who was invited to brief the members of the Contact Group on his latest moves," the Jeddah-based OIC Secretariat said in a statement.

"Syed Hamid briefed the meeting on his vision and planned action in dealing with the issue of Rohingya Muslims of Myanmar," it said.

Appointed by Iyad last month, Syed Hamid's role as Special Envoy is to strengthen diplomatic efforts between the OIC and Myanmar authorities as well as pursuing the cause at regional and international levels.

This is aimed at promoting peace and restoring harmony, especially among non-Muslims and Muslims in Myanmar through comprehensive dialogues.

Arakan Rohingya Union director-general Dr. Wakar Uddin gave a presentation on the latest development with regard to Rohingya Muslims and urged OIC member states to render more support.

The OIC Contact Group includes Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Senegal, Indonesia, Malaysia, Brunei Darussalam, Bangladesh, Djibouti, Turkey, Afghanistan and the United Arab Emirates.
